Sri Lanka’s supreme court has ordered the shipping company X-Press Feeders to pay $1 billion in compensation, over environmental and economic damage caused by a container ship which sank off the coast of Colombo four years ago.

The X-Press Pearl was carrying chemicals including nitric acid when a fire broke out on board and burned for 13 days before the vessel sank.
The toxic spill caused widespread damage to marine life and the ocean’s ecosystem.
