At one minute past seven, Australia paused to remember the 15 people who died in the antisemitic Bondi terror attack.
People were asked to observe a minute’s silence and light a candle in their windows, with the theme of the remembrance event being "Light Will Win."
On December 14 last year, two terrorists shattered the joy at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, opening fire on a large gathering of Jewish families.
Australia’s prime minister described how they, with hate in their hearts and guns in their hands, killed, injured, and traumatised so many people.
It was immediately clear that it was not a random act of violence. The gunman stood on the vantage point of a bridge, firing round after round at members of the Jewish community.
The shooting lasted for ten minutes until police subdued the gunmen, one of them shot dead, the other taken to hospital and eventually into custody, charged with murder and terror offences.
In days and weeks since the shooting, the names and stories of the heroes who saved lives amidst the panic and the danger have started to emerge.
One of them is 14-year-old Chaya Dadon, who has been nominated for Australian of the Year.
