2024 YR4 Asteroid Q&A | How worried should we be? Is there a contingency plan?

There is a chance – albeit a small one – that an asteroid could hit planet Earth within the next decade.

There is an estimated 3.1% chance that the 2024 YR4 asteroid hits Earth, but how worried should we really be?

Sky’s Tom Clarke and Mickey Carroll answer your questions in a special Q&A. They will be joined by Professor Stephen Smartt, Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Oxford and Planetary Scientist Terik Daly

He also works on the ATLAS telescope project, which scans the sky to calculate trajectory of objects like 2024 YR4.
