On The UK Tonight with Matt Barbet… one of the worst aviation disasters of the past 20 years.
Shortly after six o’clock this evening, Air India Flight 171 from Ahmedabad was due to land at London Gatwick. It never arrived. With 242 people on board – including 53 British nationals – the Boeing 787 Dreamliner had only just taken off when it lost height and crashed moments later.
Initially, it was understood everybody on board had died – but by some miracle. a British man from Leicester managed to walk away from the wreckage.
Sky News has spoken to his family, whose joy at his survival was mixed with pain. His brother was also on the plane, presumed to be amongst the victims.
