A British-born rabbi was among at least 16 people, including a 10-year-old girl, who died after a mass shooting during a Jewish holiday celebration at Sydney’s Bondi Beach.
New South Wales Police confirmed the death toll had risen to 16 overnight, while 40 remain in hospital.
The victims’ ages range from 10 to 87. NSW Ambulance chief executive Dr Dominic Morgan said crews were on the scene in under 10 minutes.
Mr Schlanger’s late great uncle had been rabbi at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue, which was the target of a terrorist attack on Yom Kippur that left two men dead, his cousin told ITV News.
Dozens were injured after two gunmen, now known to be a father and son, aged 50 and 24, attacked a Hanukkah celebration at the iconic Australian beach on Sunday in what Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called an act of antisemitic terrorism that struck at the heart of the nation.
It is the deadliest shooting in almost three decades in a country with strict gun laws.
