Afghanistan earthquake: At least 800 people dead

At least 800 people have been killed and 2,500 injured after a strong earthquake struck a remote mountainous region in eastern Afghanistan, the Taliban government has said.

The 6.0 magnitude quake struck at 11.47pm and hit towns in the province of Kunar, near the city of Jalalabad in neighbouring Nangahar province, causing extensive damage.

The number of deaths is expected to rise as rescue organisations struggle to reach the area, which is close to the Pakistan border in the northeast of the country.
