African leaders call for fairer climate financing | DW News

African leaders are calling to change what they say is an unfair system of climate financing, and have criticized richer nations for failing to deliver on their yearly climate pledges.

Officials met in the Kenyan capital for a second day of Africa’s first climate summit. African countries contribute little to global greenhouse gas emissions, but suffer disproportionately from the effects of climate change. Speakers at the summit are asking rich nations to increase their investments in green energy.

UN Secretary General Antonio Gueterres said countries must provide the financial resources to help Africa transition to renewable energy. The European Investment Bank (EIB) is one of the biggest lenders to African climate projects. DW correspondent Christine Mhundwa spoke to the Vice President of the EIB, Thomas Östros. She asked him what the EIB is bringing to the table at the summit.
