Albania protests turn violent as students clash with police in Tirana | DW News

Violent clashes have erupted in Albania’s capital Tirana as thousands of student-led protesters demonstrate against corruption, rising education costs and poor university conditions. Police used tear gas and water cannon to disperse crowds, with scores of people detained and several injured.

The demonstrations began in May but have now escalated into some of the most violent confrontations reported since the movement started.

Students are demanding better university conditions, greater financial support and improved employment prospects after graduation. With opposition groups and the wider anti-government movement also joining the protests, could Albania be heading towards a broader political crisis?
