
The government has appeared poised to water down plans for a new mandatory digital identification system for right-to-work checks.
Westminster had initially billed the ID as a way of removing a pull factor that made the prospect of illegally crossing the Channel in search of work an appealing one.
The diluting of the government’s flagship digital ID plans is viewed as the latest in a list of policy climbdowns. The extent of which led Lib Dem MP Lisa Smart to joke Downing Street must be “bulk ordering motion sickness tablets”.
