Alligator Alcatraz: the US detention centre in the heart of the Everglades

Well as President Trump presses ahead with his crackdown on immigration – the latest controversy is Alligator Alcatraz.

Built on an airstrip west of Miami in Florida’s Everglades, the detention facility was opened earlier this month by the president himself – who described the hundreds of thousands of alligators who inhabit the area as natural bodyguards.

He says the facility is needed to curb illegal migration, but human rights organisations say it’s inhumane – and an attack on civil liberties.
