American Robert Prevost elected as Pope Leo XIV

It’s over a century since a pope with the name Leo led the church, but this pope is a moderate, favoured by the late Pope Francis – and emerged as a "dark horse" candidate in the days before the conclave.

Robert Prevost is the first American to lead the Catholic church in its 2,000-year history.
