Amnesty flags deadly post-election violence in Tanzania | DW News

Amnesty International says Tanzanian security forces used ‘unlawful lethal force’ to suppress protests after this year’s October election. In its latest report, the human rights organization says security forces fired live ammunition and tear gas at protesters. It describes how demonstrators faced beatings and arrests, and the bodies of victims were taken to undisclosed locations. Amnesty says hundreds of people were reported killed or injured – though the government has not released official figures. Tanzania’s president has announced an inquiry, but civil society groups question its independence. We speak to Sikula Oniala, a researcher for Tanzania and Uganda with Amnesty International.
