It was grand – as the funeral of the leader of the world’s more than one billion Catholics must be. But it was also humble, in the ways the late Pope requested.
A simple wooden coffin – honoured at the Vatican but not interred there.
That was the scene in Rome – at the final resting place of Pope Francis – the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. Away from the rulers and the royals who attended the memorial to him. But nearer to the hundreds of thousands of ordinary people who were there too.
