Andy Burnham 'has safe seat READY to go' as Manchester mayor heads to London to TAKE ON Keir Starmer

Andy Burnham has found a safe seat to contest in order to oust Sir Keir Starmer from Downing Street.

The Mail reports a close ally of Mr Burnham’s has confirmed the constituency is ‘lined up and ready to go’.

The journey to Downing Street would still entail significant hurdles. Burnham would first have to win the byelection in his chosen constituency, then fight off competition from those already in parliament for the leadership of Labour, both of which would require Keir Starmer to remain a lame duck prime minister in Downing Street through the summer. Labour were recently hammered by Reform UK and the Greens in the Gorton and Denton byelection, meaning a win for Burnham is far from guaranteed.

So far today three ministers in the government have quit, the most senior being safeguarding minister Jess Phillips. All called on Keir Starmer to step aside.

Burnham’s allies are calling for a ‘timetable’ for the Prime Minister’s exit rather than an immediate contest, to allow the Manchester mayor the time he needs. Those on the Right of the party would prefer a swift replacement as moving before Burnham can win a seat favours their candidate – Health Secretary Wes Streeting. It is thought Burnham would win an open contest against Streeting.
