Anora stars on class, power and the Oscars

Anora is not your typical Oscar contender – set in New York’s Brighton Beach, it tells the story of a young sex worker – played by Mikey Madison – who falls for the wealthy son of a Russian oligarch.

But Sean Baker’s film has already attracted six Academy Award nominations – including best picture – and took home the prestigious Palme d’Or in Cannes.

We spoke to Sam Baker and Mikey Madison – who was named Breakthrough Performer of the Year at last night’s Critics’ Circle Film Awards.
