The Church of England has "profoundly" apologised for the first time for "the pain, the trauma and the stigma" suffered by tens of thousands of women and their children, now adults, by historical forced adoption.
In an interview with ITV News, the Archbishop of Canterbury Sarah Mullally acknowledged the Church’s central role in the scandal and said survivors "have nothing to be ashamed of", adding: "the shame is ours".
Thursday’s announcement comes after a long-running ITV News investigation has laid bare the trauma and neglect faced by both mothers and their children, now adults, many of whom are still searching for answers or have since died.
