A federal court in the US has blocked Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs, saying the president overstepped his authority. Trump had invoked an emergency powers law when he unveiled the tariffs on April 2nd – declaring it Liberation Day. He claimed trade deficits and the threat posed by Mexican drug cartels allowed him to impose across-the-board import duties. But the Court said the US constitution gave Congress exclusive powers to regulate trade with other nations. The Trump administration is appealing the ruling.
