Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is set to meet one of his biggest leadership rivals on Wednesday morning as he attempts to stave off a Labour rebellion.
It comes after four ministers resigned from Starmer’s government on Tuesday following a dire set of local and devolved election results last week, while more than 90 MPs have said they are prepared to oust the PM.
Some Cabinet members, including Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy and Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, have said they are standing by Starmer, but other ministers are yet to publicly pick a side.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting – who ITV News understands has made it clear he wants to be the UK’s next prime minister, but will not be the first to break cover in a coup against Starmer – is expected to meet the PM on Wednesday morning.
