Iran’s allies, the Houthis in Yemen, are threatening to close a major trade route between Europe and Asia, according to intelligence sources in the region.
ITV News has been told there is real concern that an expansion of the war will see the Houthis engage and disrupt shipping through Bab el-Mandeb, which lies between Yemen and Djibouti.
It is the direct route to the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean and is Europe’s primary trade link with Asia.
Sources wouldn’t explicitly lay out what escalation looked like, but indicated the Houthis were alert to other countries acting against Iran.
