Voters turned out under tight security, with many describing the day as a long-awaited opportunity to have their voices heard.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party leads in the polls, while the Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami has re-emerged as a significant force.

Results are expected on Friday. After years of unrest and a deadly crackdown, many say the outcome matters less than the simple fact that they were finally able to vote.
