US president Joe Biden said Democrat Senate leader Chuck Schumer’s concerns about Israel are shared by many Americans. Biden said: ‘I’m not going to elaborate on his speech, he made a good speech and I think he expressed a serious concern shared not only by him but by many Americans.’
Biden made the remarks during a bilateral meeting with Irish taoiseach Leo Varadkar and came after Schumer, the highest-ranking Jewish official in the US, said Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu was an obstacle to peace and warned Israel that the US would be prepared to use its leverage if it didn’t change course on the Gaza war. Schumer’s comments were criticised by Israel’s president and Netanyahu’s Likud party and a state department spokesperson distanced the Biden administration from them
