Biden visits Vietnam to try and cut China out of microchip market

President Joe Biden met with his Vietnamese counterpart Vo Van Thuong in Hanoi on Monday, after the two countries signed a historic agreement to upgrade relations to the level of ‘comprehensive strategic partnership’.

The agreement underlines America’s desire to boost Vietnam’s global role, particularly in manufacturing microchips, with Washington seeking to reduce reliance on Chinese based, which has proven risky so far, resulting in trade friction and tensions over Taiwan.

During his 24-hour visit to Vietnam, Biden also met with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and other top leaders of the Southeast Asian nation.

Biden then attended a state banquet, accompanied by Secretary Blinken, and visited the John McCain Memorial in Hanoi before heading back to the US.
