Germany’s AfD looks set for a strong win in Saxony-Anhalt, exit polls have indicated – although it is not yet clear if the party will be able to form the country’s first far-right state government since the Second World War.
Alternative for Germany (AfD) went into the vote in the eastern state seeking an absolute majority to govern on its own, which would overcome the so-called “firewall” of mainstream parties, who have refused to work with them.
Polls indicate the far-right party is set to win around 44% of the vote, far ahead of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) with 18.5% and the Left Party with about 9%.
