Andy Burnham has said it is "simply untrue" that he was told he would be blocked from standing as Labour’s candidate in the upcoming Gorton and Denton by-election before he sought permission to put his name forward.
He said: "It is simply untrue to say that I was told that I would be blocked, so I can’t say any more than that. I went through the whole weekend having conversations with people in Number 10, people in senior positions to the party, to discuss the pros and cons and that’s all I can say.
"It’s simply untrue to say there was a message given that I will definitely be blocked because, after all, the National Executive Committee (NEC) is meant to be an independent body."
