Within hours, Andy Burnham was being sworn in as an MP for Makerfield at Westminster, with hundreds of Labour MPs surrounding him afterwards for selfies.

There is no sign of anyone standing against him and the current timetable suggests he will become prime minister within a month, but it could be sooner.
The man whose victory in 2024 was dubbed the loveless landslide, whose style was criticised as lacking charisma and emotion finally let it all out as Starmer paid tribute to his wife and children.
