The Labour NEC which previously blocked Andy Burnham has said yes, he can apply to be the candidate in the Makerfield by-election.
It’s expected on June 18 and Wes Streeting, who quit the cabinet on Thursday, has welcomed Burnham’s move, saying he’s Labour’s best chance of winning the by-election, where Reform UK is promising a hard fight.
The markets are apparently less enthusiastic about Andy Burnham running than Labour MPs. Stocks and sterling are down, and government borrowing costs are up.
