For many of the country’s hundreds of thousands of students, Thursday’s GCSE exam results were good news.
In Northern Ireland, almost a third of entries got the top grades. While in Wales, top grades rose slightly but the overall pass rate was down.
In England, the number of 16-year-olds getting a level 4 – a pass – in Maths and English was up.
But it’s a different story for older pupils taking resits to try to pass these obligatory foundation subjects.
Many try again and again without success, a situation described by the Education Secretary as a “treadmill of failure”.
Now the government is promising to bring in new ways to progress to a career.
