Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomed the proposal to become an "associate member" of the European Union.

Carney said a deeper alliance between Canada and the EU would create a “beacon for other democracies” during a speech to the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
On Wednesday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she wants to "open the door" to Canada becoming the first “associate member” of the bloc.
Carney outlined a number of ways he hopes to “secure strategic autonomy” between Canada and Europe, including on critical minerals, AI safety and allowing an exchange of university students.
He said the two were "pursuing resilience so that no one can undermine our freedoms, our democracies, our rule of law."
Last month, the Canadian prime minister dropped out of trade talks with the US.
