President Trump says he would impose "serious tarriffs" on the European Union if Canada becomes the bloc’s first "associate member".

The European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, told European Parliament on Wednesday that she wanted to "open the door" to closer ties with Canada – though it’s not clear how an "associate membership" would work in practice.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who pulled out of trade talks with the US last month, has said he is seeking a "unique alliance" with the EU.
Trump called the prospect of the membership "laughable" and said if it was done with "bad intention" he would put "very heavy tariffs on Europe".
