Chancellor using mansplaining claims as 'smokescreen' ahead of Budget, says senior Tory

The shadow chancellor has rejected claims from Chancellor Rachel Reeves that men have "mansplained" economics to her.

Ms Reeves said she had been patronised by men telling her how to run the economy.

Sir Mel Stride was asked if he was one of the men the chancellor was referring to.

"I think this is just all chaff that’s being thrown up in the air, a smokescreen to try and get us off what’s really happening," he said.

"This isn’t about gender, this is about mismanagement of the economy."
