England have retained their European title after beating Spain 3-1 on penalties.
The Lionesses went down in the first half after a header by Spain’s Mariona Caldentey in the 25th minute, but pulled it back with a goal from her Arsenal teammate Alessia Russo to finish the match 1-1 following extra time.
They then went on to beat the world champions after a tense penalty shoot-out, with substitute Chloe Kelly – who made the difference in extra time at Wembley three summers ago – firing in the winner.
Speaking after the win, Kelly said on BBC One: “I’m so proud of this team, so grateful to wear this badge and so proud to be English.
“I was cool, I was composed, I knew I was going to hit the back of the net. I don’t miss penalties twice.
“It’s unbelievable, it’s not just this team, it’s the staff behind us. Twenty-three players and all the staff behind us. Sarina Wiegman has done it again. It’s unbelievable.
“It’s going to be crazy. I hope the whole of England comes out to support us and show the love to all these girls because they deserve it.”
England fans had watched on nervously as they once again found themselves behind in a crucial Euros tie.
