The Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood will allow some criminals to be released from custody a third of the way through their sentences in order to ease the pressure on crowded prisons.

She told MPs she was accepting most of the proposals put forward by the former Conservative Justice Secretary David Gauke to let well-behaved prisoners out early and scrap most short custodial sentences altogether. The government will also widen the use of chemical libido suppressants for some sex offenders.
