A large blast at a barbecue restaurant in the north-western Chinese city of Yinchuan killed at least 31 people. The explosion tore through the restaurant on the eve of a popular local holiday and was caused by a gas leak, according to state media.

Seven more people are receiving medical treatment, with one in critical condition. The explosion took place on Wednesday evening at about 8.40pm in Fuyang Barbecue Restaurant in downtown Yinchuan
