Plans for a so-called "Britannia Shield" were unveiled at the Conservative Party conference, billed as "the most significant upgrade to the country’s air defences in a generation".

Party leader Kemi Badenoch initially described it as "in essence a British Iron Dome”, implying it would deal with a similar threat of short-range rockets as that faced by the Israelis.

But questions about how it would work saw Badenoch struggle, after doubts emerged about its effectiveness in the face of the threat from Russian missile and drone attacks.

Britannia, the Tories promised, would detect threats and stop them before they reach British soil.
