The leader of Ivory Coast’s opposition PDCI-RDA party has told ITV News the government is trying to block him from running in October’s presidential election.
Mr Thiam, a former CEO of Credit Suisse bank, is currently facing a legal challenge relating to his Ivorian citizenship. He told Global Affairs Analyst Rageh Omaar the claims are orchestrated by the administration of President Outtara.
The Ivorian government did not respond when asked to comment by ITV News.
Mr Thiam also provided a video which he claimed shows tactics of intimidation by government forces.
Alassane Outtara has been president of the Ivory Coast since 2010, overseeing a period of economic boom. But, he has indicated that he’d like to run for a fourth term this October – a controversial move because the Ivorian constitution has a two-term limit.
