A US jury on Wednesday found Meta and YouTube must pay millions of dollars in damages, following a landmark trial that accused the tech giants of intentionally addicting a young woman and injuring her mental health.
Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp, and Google, which owns YouTube, were negligent in the design of their platforms; knew their design was dangerous; failed to warn of those risks; and caused substantial harm to the plaintiff, jurors found.
This case in the US is the first of its kind to go to trial, and could influence the outcome of thousands of similar lawsuits accusing social media companies of deliberately causing harm.
So how significant is this case, and is it likely to impact people in the UK?
