Could civil war break out in Iran?

“I see no other option.” This is what one Tehran resident, who had previously opposed foreign intervention, told our reporter Deepa Parent after the US and Israel launched an attack on Iran.

“We once wished freedom would come without outside help,” he said, but after January’s bloodshed he believes unarmed civilians have no other option.

As footage slowly trickles in from Iran, videos shared online in the hours after reports of the supreme leader’s death appeared to show celebratory crowds. At the same time, pro-regime mourners gathered publicly to grieve the death of Ali Khamenei, underscoring just how divided the country is.

Donald Trump and key administration figures have given contradictory accounts of the aims of the war, but at one point Trump presented the devastating assault as a once‑in‑a‑lifetime chance for the people of Iran to “take back your government”.

For now, regime change appears to be an aspiration rather than a plan, leaving much to chance and factors that will be hard for any of the current protagonists to control or even predict.
