Turkey backs the rebel forces who seized the city of Aleppo in a lightning offensive over the weekend. Iran and Russia support the regime of President Bashar al-Assad. The rebel advance marks the most serious development in the Syrian war since 2020
So, who are the anti-government forces in Syria and what do they want? One key player is the group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). It already controls much of northwest Syria and is now expanding its reach.
