A power struggle is underway in Iran. The son of the Shah of Iran, who was ousted by the 1979 Islamic Revolution, is calling for even bigger protests. However, Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has taken a defiant stance, labeling the demonstrators as vandals and saboteurs. The demonstrators have openly called for an end to the Islamic Republic’s theocratic rule. These protests are the biggest in years and have left a trail of destruction in their wake. Protesters reportedly set fire to buildings and vehicles. Human rights groups accuse the authorities of opening fire on demonstrators, killing dozens. President Donald Trump has warned that the United States will respond harshly to any deaths. Iran has shut down the internet and cut off international calls to quell the growing rallies.
