Brazilian star Wagner Moura is the first man from his country to get a best actor Oscar nomination.
His film The Secret Agent is about an academic on the run from persecution during the military dictatorship in Brazil.
He says the Latino acting population must simply say no when offered roles that perpetuate stereotypes about them.
Moura does recognise the significance of the nominations for him and the film, and says he is gratified at the conversations that have opened up surrounding The Secret Agent.
He adds that the film’s setting in an authoritarian regime should also serve as a warning from history.
