Councils across England have spent more than £3.7 billion on sending children with special education needs and disabilities (SEND) to private schools, ITV News analysis can reveal.
More than 80% of SEND pupils go to mainstream state schools, according to figures by the Department for Education but in some circumstances, a child’s Education, Health and Care plan (EHCP) – a legal document outlining a young person’s needs – can recommend putting them in a private school with the costs covered by the local authority.
