Counting begins after 18 million Australians cast their vote in the federal election | ITV News

Australians hit the polls in the country’s federal election.

The massive turnout at voting booths across the nation is nothing out of the ordinary…here casting your ballot is mandatory by law for Australia’s 18 million registered voters, with fines of $20, around £10, for no-shows.

8.6 million people had already cast their vote before today, since early and postal voting began on April 22.

At the last election in 2022, 90% of those eligible to vote, took part.
