Storm Goretti has arrived in the UK, bringing record-breaking gusts, as a rare red warning for “dangerous, stormy” winds was issued.
Winds of 99mph were recorded at St Mary’s Airport on the Isles of Scilly, on Thursday, which is a new record for the site, the Met Office said.
Goretti, the UK’s first named storm of 2026, is undergoing an “explosive deepening phase of cyclogenesis”, which forecasters warn will bring violent gusts to parts of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly posing a potential danger to life.
More than 25,000 properties are without power in south-west England, according to National Grid’s website earlier.
