David Lammy becomes deputy prime minister in major shakeup after Angela Rayner resigns | ITV News

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has reshuffled his top team after Angela Rayner resigned following a probe into her tax affairs.

David Lammy has replaced Rayner to become the deputy prime minister, in addition to the justice secretary.

Yvette Cooper has been appointed foreign secretary, and Shabana Mahmood will take up Cooper’s old role as home secretary.

Rachel Reeves will remain in her position as chancellor, marking the first time three of the Great Offices of State – which include the positions of prime minister, chancellor, home secretary and foreign secretary – have been held by women.

Steve Reed has replaced Angela Rayner as housing secretary.

The new appointments come after Rayner admitted she had underpaid stamp duty on an £800,000 flat in Hove, which is considered to be her second home.

In a letter to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Rayner said she accepted she "did not meet the highest standards".

Among Starmer’s other appointments is Pat McFadden, who will take over a new "super ministry" including the Department for Work and Pensions and the skills remit of the Department for Education.

He was previously a cabinet office minister.

Peter Kyle has become the business secretary, a role which was previously held by Jonathan Reynolds.

Reynolds will become the chief whip.

Darren Jones will remain the chief secretary to the prime minister and has also been appointed the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.

Douglas Alexander will replace Ian Murray as Scotland secretary, and Sir Alan Campbell will become leader of the House of Commons, replacing Lucy Powell.
