A 102-year-old woman died and 90 people were rescued by firefighters when floods hit Madrigueras in south-eastern Spain. The town was swamped by 142 litres of rain per square metre in just two and a half hours on Friday, submerging streets, stranding vehicles, damaging businesses and trapping residents in their homes. The flooding follows the hottest summer on record in Spain, where more than 2,000 people are thought to have died from heat-related causes in August.
