Deadly meningitis outbreak may have been caused by new mutant strain

Scientists are investigating whether a mutant strain of the bacteria caused an outbreak of meningitis in Kent that killed two people.

Experts have been puzzled by the size of the outbreak.

The UKHSA said the new strain, COVID lockdowns and the behaviour of people who got infected are all likely to have combined to fan the outbreak.
