'Dickensian poverty' for English kids

The children’s commissioner Dame Rachel de Souza has said that some young people in England are living in what she said was an “almost-Dickensian level of poverty" as she insisted the two-child benefit limit must be scrapped.

The latest official estimates, for the year to March 2024, suggest there were a record 4.45 million children living in poverty in the UK.

The limit, which came into effect under the Conservatives in 2017, restricts child tax credit and universal credit to the first two children in most households.
