Did 'rare atmospheric phenomenon' cause massive power failure?

It has been suggested that a "rare atmospheric phenomenon" led to an unprecedented power outage in Spain and Portugal which left millions of people without electricity.

The entire Iberian Peninsula was reportedly brought down by the outage that happened in just five seconds, affecting hospitals and schools, causing travel chaos and forcing play to be abandoned at the Madrid Open tennis tournament.

Professor of aerospace engineering Sinead O’Sullivan explains what the "rare atmospheric phenomenon" could have been and why it would affect power supplies.
