Disappointment as gov’t rolls back on compensation promise

The government has promised much to grooming victims this year – a new inquiry, and fully implementing the recommendations from the independent child sexual abuse inquiry in 2022.

But some survivors are disappointed after the government rolled back on one of the recommendations – that victims of child abuse shouldn’t be restricted from accessing compensation if they have an unspent conviction.

The decision has been devastating for those affected, who say the money would allow them to move on from the abuse.

We spoke to Gemma Claydon, a grooming survivor from Rochdale, who is waiving her anonymity to speak out.
