President Trump is meeting with the Colombian president Gustavo Petro at the White House. It is their first face to face meeting since the capture of Nicolas Maduro.
Trump has been highly critical of Colombia’s approach to drug trafficking, and has even suggested the US could intervene if the cartels are not dealt with by Petro’s government.
The two leaders are ideologically far apart, and both have a tendency for unpredictability. It means that anything could happen in today’s meeting.
In recent days, Petro has called Trump an “accomplice to genocide” in the Gaza Strip, and has claimed that the capture of Maduro was a kidnapping.
Before he left for Washington, Petro called on Colombians to take to the streets of his country’s capital during the White House meeting.
